Part III of the New Writing Prompt Wednesday is Here!

In my corner of the world, we are thoroughly snowed in. It has snowed all day today and the temperature has dropped into ridiculous temperatures, at least by my standards. I guess it’s the perfect time for a little more Rohan of the Ruin writing prompt!

Last week’s Writing Prompt Wednesday (WPW) introduced us to our female main character (FMC), Faelynn. Faelynn stood outside her village, refusing to allow King Akar’s army in without a fight.

When we left Rohan, he had taken Faelynn as his prisoner and was returning to the army, a plan forming in his mind. The problem with the plan? It may hinge on the fiery young woman doing what she’s told. . . or maybe that is exactly what the plan needs, a little more chaos.

General Maw insisted on seeing the woman. Rohan refused. The general’s face flushed red with anger but Rohan led Galahan past the sputtering man and toward his private lodgings. As he walked through the encampment, soldiers hurried to fling themselves from his path letting him pass by without issue. The more space he put between Faelynn and General Maw, the better.

Before settling Faelynn in his tent, Rohan led Galahan to the stabling space where the few other horses waited, tended to by a contingent of six stable boys. Galahan didn’t particularly care for any of the stable boys but Rohan had other matters to see to, namely the young woman who still lay over Galahan‘s back like a sack of potatoes.

His horse tended to, Rohan hauled Faelynn over his shoulder and strode through the camp, not making eye contact with any as he passed. He needed her secluded as soon as possible if he meant to speak with her before he could no longer hold General Maw off. Rohan sat her on his sleeping pallet and stepped back. Admittedly, he wasn’t prepared for the fiery death glare she gave him. The violence in her blue-green eyes momentarily startled him, then he grinned. It was a foreign feeling, the way his skin stretched on his face, lifting into a smile.

Faelynn opened her mouth to deliver what he was sure would be a scathing dressing-down, but he held his hand up to stop her. Rohan listened, waiting for a group of foot soldiers to wander drunkenly by outside. He moved away from her toward the map table on the other side of the tent and motioned for her to join him.

He waited, watching while she worked through the need to rip his throat out. Faelynn sighed and walked over to join him, “What is this?”

Rohan took a moment to decide what he would say. Speaking wasn’t something he did often and it didn’t feel natural anymore.

He gestured toward the maps pinned to the table, “This is the might of King Akar’s army.”

Her eyes widened, “And you are showing me, why?”

“I think you have something that can help me,” Rohan said, running his fingers over the paths the armies marched on.

Her brow furrowed, “Help you? Why would I help you?”

Rohan met her eyes and he wondered what she saw there. He was tired, so so tired of being Rohan of the Ruin. He wanted to go home and see his sister, to rest in silence, not be held as a pet monster for the king to use as he willed.

“Because you want the same thing I do,” he sighed in a whisper, “I want to bring down the king and restore peace to Agradell.”

Faelynn gasped and stepped back. He didn’t blame her hesitation. They were discussing the ultimate form of treason after all.

“Why do you want to overthrow the king?”

Rohan didn’t want to get into the particulars; his reasons didn’t matter to her. He’d hold those cards close to his chest for now, letting her make her assumptions about his actions.

“Look, we don’t have much time. General Maw will be here soon and he’ll want to know why I took you captive instead of destroying you and your entire village. I need to know if you are serious about defending your people?” He towered over her, hoping she wouldn’t crack under his intimidation. If she did, there was no way she would be able to withstand the coming weeks. He hated to admit it, but he needed her.

Faelynn’s back went ridged and she pulled herself to her full height, which still wasn’t very tall. Staring at her, there wasn’t really anything scary about her, he wished there was something there. Maybe what she lacked in height and fear factor, she would make up in pure hatred.

“I’m serious about defending my people and this kingdom.”

He smirked, “Good, because here they come.”

By the time General Maw and his cronies left Rohan’s tent, he was ready to run each of them through with his sword. He hated his power more in that moment than he ever had. Rohan lifted Faelynn onto the sleeping pallet and covered her with his blanket, hoping she’d sleep through the remainder of the night.

He’d been thankful her mental shields had kept the portal hidden from the general and his soldiers, not only for her people’s sake but for his too. Now that he knew the portal existed, it had quickly become central to his plan. Tomorrow would be early enough to enact that plan, tomorrow, all hell would break loose. He was getting his sister back, and he was bringing down the empire while he did it.

Rohan’s cooking up something! Faelynn and her village are at the center of his scheming. What does her village have to do with Rohan’s plan to take down the king? How does he plan on protecting his sister while keeping his vow to serve the kingdom as long as King Akar and his descendants rule?

Yeah, your guess is as good as mine! Guess we’ll see what next week brings.

Happy Reading!
