It’s been a while since I’ve read a historical romance, but This Much is True reintroduced me to the genre. Without further ado, here is:

This Book Beauty’s review of This Much is True by Vivienne Lorret, releasing on July 1, 2025!

This turned out to be book 3 in The Liars’ Club series, however, each book can be read as a standalone. I didn’t feel like I’d missed out on too much by not reading the first two books before the ARC. There were some characters that I might have had more information on, but not to the extent that I felt out of the loop.

The regency era setting is descriptive, with strong descriptions of locations and clothing, among other things. The characters were also described well, so the reader can form a picture of the characters in their mind’s eye. The main characters, especially, were given great characteristics and personalities. Some of the personality quirks Lorret gave the characters brought them to life!

The female main character, Althea, is a strong-willed woman who seeks to regain her sense of self after a bad falling out during her previous season. Throughout the book, the reader can see the subtle changes in her nature as she regains her confidence. Perhaps if I’d read the first two books in the series first, the next line item wouldn’t be as notable, but Althea also has strong ties to her family! One of my favorite things.

The main male character, Jasper, spends his days and nights disguised, ensuring no one in polite society or otherwise knows who he truly is. I found Jasper’s character very well written, a good man who is desperate to protect those he loves, all the while dealing with impossible circumstances.

When it comes to the antagonist and villain, I truly learned to despise them both, so kudos for that! The happily-ever-after is there, and good conquers all!

The only things I wish were different about this novel? Well, the first 3/4 of the book has a fairly even pace, with bits of the story falling into place along the way, and the tension builds (oh my, does it build!) But once the pace picks up, it doesn’t really slow back down, taking the reader through the climax and into the resolution quickly. One moment it felt like I was just reading along, and then suddenly it was over.

Overall, a 4-star read for me, definitely worth it, and now I think I need to check out the first two books in The Liars Club.

Have you read The Liars’ Club? What do you think of books 1 and 2?
